Other processes include expression, solvent extraction, sfumatura, absolute oil extraction, resin tapping, wax embedding, and cold pressing. They have many benefits,\u201d says integrative medicine specialist&nbsp;Yufang Lin, MD. \u201cThe problem lies in how people use them.\u201d<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of essential oils<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Essential oils can be used in aromatherapy, a kind of complementary medicine that uses smell to improve your health or applied topically to the skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown that essential oils may help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Boost mood.<\/li><li>Improve job performance through reduced stress and increased attentiveness.<\/li><li>Improve sleep.<\/li><li>Kill bacteria, funguses and viruses.<\/li><li>Reduce anxiety and pain.<\/li><li>Reduce inflammation.<\/li><li>Reduce nausea.<\/li><li>Relieve headaches.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some common essential oils and their benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tea tree oil<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people use\u00a0tea tree oil as an antiseptic, antimicrobial or antifungal. You can also use it to help with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Acne.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cTake a cotton swab and dip it into tea tree essential oil. Then, apply it directly on the acne \u2014 this is one exception where you don\u2019t have to dilute it,\u201d says Dr. Lin. \u201cIt can&nbsp;help resolve acne faster.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Athlete\u2019s foot and ringworms.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cDilute it with a carrier oil (a base or vegetable oil like coconut or jojoba oil that helps dilute essential oils) and put the blend on the affected skin.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One note of caution: Since tea tree oil can be neurotoxic, Dr. Lin says you shouldn\u2019t diffuse it if you have small children or animals at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frankincense oil<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as the \u201cking of oils,\u201d&nbsp;frankincense&nbsp;can help with&nbsp;inflammation, mood and sleep. Studies have shown that it can also improve asthma and might prevent gum disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frankincense oil has a woody, spicy scent and can be used as aromatherapy and can be found in skin creams. Makes sure you dilute frankincense oil before applying it to your skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peppermint oil<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Peppermint oil is known to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be an anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antimicrobial.<\/li><li>Ease headaches.<\/li><li>Fight fatigue.<\/li><li>Lift mood.<\/li><li>Reduce gut spasms.<\/li><li>Support digestion.<\/li><li>Support memory.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeppermint tea can settle your stomach, too, if you have&nbsp;irritable bowel syndrome&nbsp;or gastric irritation,\u201d adds Dr. Lin. \u201cIt\u2019s very gentle and easy to use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When using the oil topically, make sure you dilute it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lemongrass oil<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Lemongrass oil has a strong citrus scent and is known to help relieve&nbsp;stress, anxiety&nbsp;and depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its antibacterial properties make it a good natural remedy to heal wounds and&nbsp;kill bacteria. It has been shown to prevent the growth of fungus found in athlete\u2019s foot, ringworm and jock itch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;study&nbsp;found that using lemongrass oil can help reduce blood sugar in those with type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to use a carrier oil before applying to your skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grapefruit oil<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The grapefruit is a hybrid cross between sweet oranges and pomelo and is know helps everything from reducing blood pressure and providing stress relief to treating and protecting your skin. They have been used as antiviral, antimicrobial, anticancer, and skin permeation agents (increasing skin\u2019s durability). Other benefits include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>boosts mood<\/li><li>relieves stress<\/li><li>promotes weight loss<\/li><li>curbs appetite<\/li><li>regulates blood pressure<\/li><li>improves skin health<\/li><li>reduces inflammation<\/li><li>acts as an antibacterial or antimicrobial<\/li><li>acts as an antifungal<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Diffuse it.<\/strong>\u00a0Aromatherapy can give you all the inhalation benefits, without having to worry about accidentally ingesting anything. Breathe in the grape-fruity goodness as your fave\u00a0diffuser\u00a0spreads the oil into the air.<\/li><li><strong>Massage it in.<\/strong>\u00a0Mix a few drops of essential oil into your massage carrier oil of choice and use it to rub out any knots and tension.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thyme Oil<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several studies that support thyme essential oil\u2019s ability to reduce or eliminate foodborne bacteria, support heart health, and alleviate inflammation in the body, among other benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Arthritis<\/li><li>Colds<\/li><li>Dermatitis<\/li><li>Flu<\/li><li>Insect Bites<\/li><li>Laryngitis<\/li><li>Lice<\/li><li>Muscle Aches<\/li><li>Oily Skin<\/li><li>Poor Circulation<\/li><li>Scabies<\/li><li>Sore Throat<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dilute&#8230; dilute&#8230; dilute!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Essential oils\u00a0are pretty potent, so it\u2019s important to make sure you\u2019re using a carrier oil before putting them on your skin.
