Diabetes is a serious, chronic condition when there is too much glucose (a type of sugar) in the blood. Glucose levels are usually regulated by the hormone, insulin which is created in the pancreas. People with diabetes either don\u2019t produce insulin or don\u2019t produce enough of it, which results in high blood sugar levels. This can cause long-term and short-term health complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of Diabetes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Type 1 Diabetes \u2013<\/strong> Begins when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Type 2 Diabetes<\/strong> \u2013 Happens because the body has increased insulin resistance and the body is failing to respond or use insulin properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gestational Diabetes \u2013<\/strong> Results from when a pregnant woman suddenly develops high blood-sugar levels without having a prior history of another type of diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diagnosis and treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Early diagnosis can be accomplished through relatively inexpensive testing of blood glucose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treatment of diabetes involves diet and physical activity along with lowering of blood glucose and the levels of other known risk factors that damage blood vessels. Tobacco use cessation is also important to avoid complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
